About the Royal Melbourne ICU.
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides sophisticated care and life support for seriously ill or injured patients. More than 2,000 patients are admitted each year to ICU.
The unit has both Intensive Care and High Dependency beds. It provides a full range of Level 3 adult intensive care services catering for patients from within the hospital, from the Emergency Department and transfers from other hospitals.
In May 2016, a new state-of-the art 42-bed capacity Intensive Care Unit opened at the hospital as part of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) project. It is one of the biggest Intensive Care Units in Australia.
ICU sees the following types of patients needing care for:
- cardiac surgery
- major trauma
- complex respiratory management
- renal failure
- infectious diseases
- multiple organ dysfunction
The Intensive Care Unit has a highly successful teaching program for University of Melbourne medical students and postgraduate nursing programs.
