TOPIC SYNOPSIS

An Earful – Occupational Noise in the workplace to Generational Hearing Loss

The session will discuss the effect of noise on employees of dental clinics. Is the intensity and frequency of dental instruments used by dental staff nurses, and the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss related? Most research about noise-induced hearing loss has focused on prolonged exposure to loud sounds in workplaces. While not as much research exists regarding the effect of recreational exposure to loud sound, if you listen to music and audio with headphones or earbuds — whether they’re connected to your iPod, your computer or some other audio source, what is the long term outlook to your hearing health?

“The Philosophy of Complete Dento-Facial Aesthetics”

In this presentation, Dr Holt will discuss the philosophy of "Complete Dento- Facial Aesthetics". We will see why dental practices have the opportunity to take a lead role in primary and preventative healthcare beyond the mouth and why it is that Dental Practitioners are among the best people to be offering facial aesthetic services to patients. The hot topics of Botox and Dermal Fillers will be discussed and participants will gain an understanding of how facial aesthetics can offer more to both our patients and our practices.

“Dento-Facial Aesthetics and the Dental Team”

In his second presentation, Dr Holt will outline specific ways that Dental Hygienists, Oral Health Therapists and Dental Assistants and support staff can become involved in offering facial aesthetics within the dental practice. From Concentrated Growth Factors and Chemical Peels, through to Cosmeceuticals and Lasers, there are now many new opportunities for career progression and clinical practice for all practitioners.

Management of Compromised Teeth: An Orthodontic Perspective

Compromised teeth with questionable prognosis may result in short and long-term clinical dilemmas. Such compromise may arise from developmental anomalies, caries, large restorations, trauma, tooth wear and periodontal disease. There are many factors to consider when formulating relevant and reasonable treatment options for such patients. Incorporating orthodontic treatment into the comprehensive treatment plan has the potential to significantly improve both aesthetic and functional outcomes in challenging cases. The use of lateral thinking and emerging technology may also facilitate the overall case management.

Child Abuse and the Dental Team

Child abuse is not uncommon. Sometimes physical signs including bruising and bite marks may be apparent. Victims may be withdrawn and uncommunicative and they are unlikely to volunteer information. This session discusses the problem and outlines the contribution the Dental Team may make to the recognition and reporting of child abuse for proper investigation. This may save a child's life. This is one of the most significant services that a Dental Team can provide to those without a voice.

Advances in Maxillofacial Surgery - computer-assisted and simulated surgery

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace and is becoming a vital component in diagnosis, planning and intraoperatively in maxillofacial surgery. The available technology and its implementation in trauma, deformity and osseointegrated implant cases will be discussed.
